Bio - Adria Di Maria

Allow me to introduce myself, Adria Di Maria, and the exciting world of Para-equestrian dressage, a sport which has been developing over the past 25 years. Athletes are classified according to their level of disability and compete on a national and international level. I contracted Polio in 1955, and as a result have significant weakness in both of my legs.

My goal is simple: I plan on being the best challenged rider I can be. This means being not only a member of our proud US Para-equestrian Team, but also a respected and contributing member of the community. As a Para-equestrian competitor, I hope to become an ambassador for the disabled athlete and to the world community in the specialty of Para Dressage at the Paralympics in 2012/ England.

Pan Pan is now the offical "stud" at Reins! As I have reported before, he really puts up a fuss when his lady love is out of the next door stall. Sooooo, now Pan gets put in a stall boardering the mares pasture during those times. He calls and all five mares rush to his side. . ... three of which actively seek his attention. It is such a hoot! We may start calling him "Hugh Hueffner".

Paralmpics meets Hollywood. Had a very interesting day being interviewed by Kita who is doing a film documentary on "Horses and Women". She is hoping to present it at the Sundance Film Festival. It will take about a year to complete. My hope is that this might ignite interest from a potential sponsor and /or a competition horse donor. It was great fun and Habakatz was such a good boy standing patiently next to me while I was interview for almost 30 minutes! A touching moment came when I was asked what sound I likes best about a horse. I find their soft blowing both inviting and soothing. I bend over and demonstrated by blowing gently in Havakatz's nostril.. He immediately responded to me in kind and a magic moment was all caught on camera!

Spent some time with my boy Pan today, now that the Hoedown is over. I gave him extra carrots for just being an overall good boy. Really appreciated Pan's qualities even more after needing to push Bueller with double crop and spurs through the whole Hoedown presentation!

Finally heard from the American Royal about the National Championships in Nov. Kansas City ,Missouri is a long way away so I'm investigating borrowing a horse for the event. Making lots of phone calls and will up date you when thing are a bit more organized. More to follow.

The Reins Hoedown was alot of fun and a great success. I ended up riding Bueller who was a bit sluggish but we made it through to the end of the program with no major hicups( although I must say I was worried I was going to have to carry him the last few moves). All in all it was a beautiful day!

Rode Pan bareback today. The wind was blowing, the air crisp and Pan was right on. I don't think anything could top this!

The Hoedown is just nine days away! Sarah and I settled on our music ( theme from The Man from Snowy River).... and found matching fun vests / bow ties/ white breeches/ tall boots and white wraps on the horses. It is all coming together nicely. At this point, I'm riding Rocky , an appendex, and Sarah is rding Bueller, the Belgium Warmblood.

Rode the black TB , Havakatz, again today. His gait is smooth as silk and it is so wonderful to ride a horse in a such collected frame! Really feel like we are making great progress! So greatful to Kim for allowing me to use her wonderful horse.

For all Pan Pan's followers, he continues to enjoy country life . He has become a bit over posessive of his girl..Princess Fiona. And when she is out of her stall..his crys of love are recognized all over the stable area... and beyond! He so looks forward to our rides ..I think if he could saddle himself he would. He seems to be doing much better with his new shoes and reduced schedule. Pan is still the star around the barn, collecting love pats and friendly hello's from students and staff alike. If only I could clone him. What a boy.

Well, it was 103 degrees today and it is the end of September...go figure. Sarah and I did practiced our routine early this morning for the upcoming Hoedown and it went well. We switched horses..I rode Rocky and she rode Bueller. They are visually very closely matched chestnuts but different temperaments. Rocky ( no salt) is forward ,coming from lead horse in the "hunt" world and Bueller is the totally layed back type! Sarah got him moving well with the use of spurs and a strong leg.... aids unfortunately I can't give him.

My boy Pan, was a bit antsy..wanting to go for a ride, too. So despite the heat..we donned the saddle and made the rounds so he could whinny are all his buds. He so enjoys our rides, I told myself I didn't even feel the blazing sun! Afterwards, he was much more content to just settle into his stall. I left him happily munching hay next to his special girl, Fiona. Let's hope tomorrow is cooler.
